Hershey's Industrial School Students
The Hershey Trust was founded in 1905 by Milton Hershey, and is a private trust fund for the Milton Hershey School and for the town. In 1909, Milton created the school and the school trust, and appointed the Hershey Trust Company as a trustee of the school trust. It helped establish the school and trust to provide full-time education and care for disadvantaged children. The Hershey Trust Company is located in the High Point Mansion. The trust administers, manages and sustains the school’s trust, M.S. Hershey foundation trust, and other philanthropies of Milton Hershey (The Hershey Trust Company, 2010). In 1935, Hershey established the M.S. Hershey Foundation, a small private charitable foundation to provide educational and cultural opportunities for local residents. The foundation supports four entities:The Hershey Story, Hershey Gardens, Hershey Theatre, and the Hershey Community Archives (Hershey Entertainment & Resorts).
As years went on the company expanded tremendously. It was constantly creating more products and quickly becoming one of the most popular chocolate companies. In 1956, the Hershey Company expanded with the buying of a new business. H.B. Reese, the creator of the Reese’s cups, got his chocolate for his “penny cups” from the Hershey Factory. The Hershey Company bought H.B. Reese Candy Company with Reese’s death in 1956. The Reese’s factory was also already located in Hershey (Hershey Entertainment & Resorts).
Today, the school is now called The Milton Hershey School. It is now a coeducational home and school that still focuses on the ideals Kitty and Milton Hershey founded the school on, it is focused on helping kids in need. The school provides a free world-class education, nurturing home with house parents, meals, clothing, health care, counseling, and career training to almost 2,000 children grades k-12 who are in social and financial need (The Hershey Company). The school expands over a 9,000 acre campus. The Trust’s assets now include 30% ownership in the Hershey Company and 100% ownership of Hershey Entertainment & Resorts Company (HERCO) (Odesser-Trophy, 2006). The Milton Hershey School is still funded by the Hershey Trust. It has since become one of the wealthiest education institutions in the world (Bozich, 2009).
The Milton S. Hershey medical center for Penn State University was founded with a $50 million award from the Milton Hershey School Trust (Hershey Entertainment& Resorts). The medical center is a working hospital, teaching hospital, and research center located in Hershey. It is a leading hospital in all categories and provides many services (Penn State Hershey, 2013).
In 1945, Milton S. Hershey died in the HomeStead at the age of 88. However his legacy still remains in every aspect of the Hershey Company. The legacy he left is one of hard work, community, and an education based thinking that is still in the heart of the company and community today. Along with the Milton Hershey School there is a public elementary, middle, and high school. The Milton S. Hershey Testimony Trust makes an annual contribution to the local public school district, Derry Township School District (Hershey Entertainment & Resorts). The company has grown from their first advertisements in the Sunday newspaper to a world known brand that is the leading producer of chocolate and non-chocolate confectionary goods in North America (Hershey Entertainment & Resorts). The Hershey Company now has additional plants in Ontario, Canada built in 1963, and Oakdale, California built in 1965 (Odesser-Trophy, 2006). The Hershey company has also bought other brands such as Twizzler (1977), San Georgio Macaroni and Delmonico foods (1966), Almond Joy and Mounds (1988), and many more (Odesser-Trophy, 2006). The town is still a close community built around the values Milton envisioned this town to be. With the streetlamps covered with a Hershey Kiss shape, a chocolate road, and the famous intersection of Chocolate Avenue and Cocoa Avenue, the whole town is built around a man’s dream of creating an affordable delicious chocolate treat. I count myself lucky to live in a town built on these values and a close community. Milton Hershey had a dream about creating a community where people can work, live, and play. With his dream “The Sweetest Place on Earth” was born.
“His deeds are his monument. His life is our Inspiration.” (Hershey
Entertainment & Resorts).
