Reflection
I have lived in Hershey for three years. Upon moving to Hershey we went to Chocolate World and learned about the history of the town and how it came about. I knew the basics of the information that I used in this project. However, I learned a lot about the town that I live in. I learned that Milton S. Hershey came from a Mennonite family and had some financial problems growing up that forced him and his family to constantly be moving around the area. I was unaware that he stopped going to school after the fourth grade. I think it is amazing to think that someone who received so little education completed so much in his lifetime. He created a business from the ground up, built a community, and set a legacy with his values that are instilled in the town and in the school he created with his wife for children in need. I also had no idea that the Hershey Company was so involved in the Wars and provided so much help for the soldiers overseas. I think that is really amazing and shows more of whom Milton Hershey was a person.
I used the Standard 3.H.2 Use Historical thinking skills to understand the context of events, people, and places. 3.H.2.1. Explain change over time through historical narratives. I chose this standard with the clarifying objective since I was looking at how Hershey has changed from when Milton Hershey created the company and how it is today. I also looked at how the community and town of Hershey came to be and how the town has grown into what it is today. I think it is important for students to know this because it shows how things change over time and how an industry has been built. It shows that sometimes your projects may fail but if you keep on working you can always achieve your goals. Milton Hershey had three failed businesses before he was able to have the successful company of caramels. But, he never gave up and kept trying to find different ways to create the company of his dreams. Students will also be able to connect to thistopic if they have ever had a Hershey’s bar, a Hershey’s product, or been to the park. This project has made given me many things that I can use in my classroom as a social studies teacher. I have learned about how an industry was built which will be a great topic to cover during economics and showing students how a business can be made. I can share this with other teachers as well as students since most people have heard of Hershey’s even if they had not had any.
